Mazyfum (pronounced "Maa * zee * fum" ... does NOT rhyme with "hazy"!) grew up a child of merchants in the Sword Coast. They lived out in the world among the other races, and facilitated trade between the local elven communities and the surrounding human and dwarven societies.
Mazyfum's parents had hopes of him becoming involved in the family business. But one day he rescued a boy from being kidnapped for the slave trade. That day, he decided he wanted to be a warrior, to help people and society in general. His father wasn't happy, but saw natural ability in him and eventually gave his blessings. Mazyfum began training as a warrior.
Late in his combat training, Mazyfum had the chance to witness a battle between feuding lords. All went as expected until a wizard showed up among one of the camps and began wielding death to the other camp. Late in the battle, an opposing warrior got in close to the wizard and killed him. At that point, Mazyfum pondered a warrior's weakness against mages, and a mage's weakness against a warrior. Most warriors disdain a mage's art as "cowardly" for warfare and most mages disdain a warrior's art as "simple, foolish, and headstrong when there are better and safer ways of doing things." Mazyfum didn't see it that way. He saw the advantages and disadvantages of both disciplines and wanted to be well prepared against all contingencies in warfare. Thus, he decided to practice both the art of war and the art of magic. After completing his training as a warrior, he began training as a mage and subsequent indentured servitude to finance the training.
Remembering the battle between the lords, Mazyfum was determined not to be unarmored and under-armed in the instance that the enemy got too close. This required casting spells while wearing armor. Usually, this isn't possible because the armor restricts the movement and flexibility necessary for spellcasting. Mazyfum was stubborn, though, and with the help of his tutor in magic, figured out a way to achieve "the impossible". All it really took was figuring out how to adopt the spellcasting forms to the restrictions of armor.
Upon completing his training and subsequent indenture period as a caravan guard, he traveled in search of a location to call home. He found that home in Talor's Vale.
